BENCHMARK AWARD-REVIEW:

The Manager of the Year for the China Equity category is awarded to David Choa, the lead Portfolio Manager of BNP Paribas China Equity Classic Cap Fund and head of its Greater China Equities team.

The fund stands out for its impressive benchmark outperformance over the past five years at a time when the BNP Paribas Greater China Equities team had to rebuild after the departure of three senior Portfolio Managers, considerably stretching research capability.

To manage this, David introduced a new team investment process incorporating a “Growth Framework,” a portfolio allocation model to identify the highest growth opportunities. In addition to a clear definition of research coverage and top-down strategy, a disciplined investment process was implemented with robust risk controls to support the overall Fund performance.

The fund is in a competitive space and achieved a balance between volatility and performance in its relatively short history, underscored by rapid growth in its Fund under management to over US$1.3 billion.

The Manager will further be tested as we go through more volatile periods ahead, and we await to see the power of his model managing downturns during these stressed markets.

This strategy has been reviewed by seven industry veterans of the Benchmark judging committee.
