UPAMC Great China Fund Units

BENCHMARK AWARD-REVIEW:

The UPAMC Great China Fund seeks to achieve long-term capital appreciation and stable income and has consistently generated superior returns since its launch in 2007.

The fund's remit is Greater China. It must invest a minimum of 70% of net assets in domestic and offshore equities, with government and corporate bonds, convertible bonds, and ETFs.  The strategy mainly focuses on Taiwan, China, Singapore, and Hong Kong, although can also include equities issued in Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, India, USA, UK and Germany.

The investment philosophy eschews a “”House View,”” preferring to give individual managers freedom to excel at their core skill of stock selection.  It is facilitated by encouraging open communications between analysts, managers, and investment managers – both formal and informal – so ideas are debated, tested, and validated.  The Manager believes this structure translates into optimum investment decisions, a highly stable investment team, and ultimately the fund's performance.

We note the relatively loose guidelines to the investment team and the high degree of freedom in portfolio construction.  The fund also has a relatively high turnover, with over 81% of the portfolio traded within the past three years.  That said, robust risk management processes are in place, and the fund has handled drawdowns and recovery better than peers.

The fund delivered an excellent performance with net returns of 301+ points above the benchmark on a 3Y, 5Y, 7Y, and 10Y period.    The accumulated return in 13+ years has been 307.5%, with an IRR of 8.62% and a net return of 6.67%.  After deducting the management fee of 1.75% and 0.2% custody fee and comparing the risk of this fund (RR5), this fund performance is superior.

This fund has been reviewed by three industry veterans of the Benchmark judging committee.
